Nurses in the hospital working together

Nursing may be a profession taken for granted in the U.S. (just like teachers), but the numbers speak differently to their value. As a career, there’s a lot of flexibility, stability, and earning potential working as a nurse.

Nurses make up the country's largest group of healthcare professionals — more than clinical practitioners, technologists, and even administrators. Even so, it’s not enough. The U.S. currently has an increasing shortage of nurses that is expected to grow through 2030.

It’s an opportunistic time to work as a nurse, though consider that nurse salaries can vary significantly depending on what state you’re practicing in and what position you’re working. The data shows which states can be most lucrative to work in as a nurse and which are not.

We have analyzed the following key Nursing Positions and will add to this list over time with the most up-to-date information available.

The data below is the average of all median salaries for key Nursing positions to get an idea of salaries across all states.

We have conducted a detailed analysis for each of the nursing positions below, so please click through for more information.

Median Nursing Salary by State

Across the country, it’s estimated that 1.1 million nurses are already needed in 2022 to fill open nursing positions. That number will continue to grow according to job prospect data from the BLS.

For nurses, that means there are plenty of opportunities across the country for available work, giving flexibility to where you want to live. Consider the following data of the highest and lowest paying states for nursing salaries.

A note about our data. We use the median of the data gathered from The BLS at data.bls.gov and other salary data sources such as Salary.com, Indeed.com and Zippia.com. We believe that this is the best average to follow, rather than the mean or mode. The mean will find the average of all salaries in each state; the mode will favor the most frequently reported salaries. However, the median will find the middle. All data in this report will favor the middle salary from all ranges, which means 50% will fall below and 50% will be above the salary data reported below. On another note, we have removed data from Puerto Rico, Guam, and The Virgin Islands from the data we have sourced as we have focused on the 50 US States plus The District Of Colombia.
